There's a different breed of fears to be had when we think of Greatness. There is the fear that we will not rise to the occasion, that we will fall short of a lofty goal, and we will be publicly seen as such. I've lived that fear many times and can speak to how powerful those moments were in shaping the humility I have now. Losing everything teaches you to appreciate what you have, and recognize it much clearer. To that end, I'm curious how much we understand this fear when it comes to being "the greatest nation", because we've known for some time that America is not (if ever it was) the great Nation that some circles would have us believe it is/was.
There's the token argument posed by Jeff Daniels' character (Will McAvoy), "it's not the greatest country... but it can be". This comes during a tirade where he lists off the multiple reasons why we aren't "the greatest", or "Number 1" like we'd like to claim. There's a few things that needs to be addressed with this if we ever intend to move forward. While this viral piece of media is important, understanding WHY it's so important is a bigger deal.
1. Why are Diversity and Opportunity not valid answers?
2. Why is Freedom, and Freedom, not a valid answer?
3. Why is Will McAvoy's criticism the only valid choice in hoping for a better America, and how "MAGA" is a bad-faith implied-argument at it's worst.
